2018 Silver Circle Inductee Doug Armstrong
Doug Armstrong retired as president and general manager of the KTVB News Group in March 2018. The KTVB News Group is a subsidiary of TEGNA and consists of KTVB-Boise, KTFT-Twin Falls, KTVB’s 24/7, KTVB.com, and KTVB Mobile.
Doug’s broadcasting career started in 1985 as controller and business manager for KTVB, where he helped start up new NBC station KTFT in 1986. In 1987, King Broadcasting Company purchased KHNL in Honolulu, Hawaii, and asked Doug to transfer there as controller and business manager. In 1989, at age 31, he was promoted to president and general manager. He initiated a local marketing agreement merger with KFVE, creating a combined two-station operation. While at KHNL/KFVE he switched affiliations from FOX to NBC, moved to new studio facilities, started a newsroom from scratch, grew staffing by 100 percent, and launched local news from the first all-digital newsroom in America (a beta co-development project with AVID). In 1996, Doug was named president and general manager of KTVB/KTFT. For 22 years, he steadily grew the audience rating and local news preference rating.
He was the founder of Drug Free Idaho and has served on the boards of the Honolulu Chamber of Commerce, Boise Chamber of Commerce and Boise Regional Economic Partnership. He has also been involved with Boise Public Schools Education Foundation, YMCA, Caring Foundation for Children and the 2009 Special Olympics World Winter Games.
Doug was inducted into the Boise Chamber of Commerce Hall of Fame in 2013 and named 2014 General Manager of the Year by Broadcasting & Cable Magazine. He has a degree in Business Administration from Whitworth University and is currently enrolled in graduate school at the Moody Theological Seminary in Chicago. Doug claims the role of husband and father as the top priorities of his time. He has been married to Amber for 30 years and they have three children.
